Toddlers Without Tiaras

… tales of my threenager

I hate naps!

Does anyone else have a Threenager who hates naps?

Naps.  That moment in time where there is a few moments of peace and quiet.  My Threenager still naps, still needs naps, and still fights me every time I suggest it is time to have one.  Some of her little friends have given up the naps.  I am not ready to let that happen.  Nap time is the time for me to do everything I can’t accomplish when my girls are awake (including having a nap myself.)

A few weeks ago, at nap time, my Threenager was crying and kept saying ‘I hay na!’  It took me a few times to figure it out as the words came out between the crying and screaming.  After the 5th time I asked if she had just said ‘I hate naps!’  With a twinkle in her eyes, the tears stopped.  She confirmed my suspicion and then started to giggle (well giggle until I told her that she still had to have a nap.)

Nap time is an art.  I have spent the past 3 years trying to perfect my skills. I’ve learned the hard way to never let her fall asleep in the car.  If that happens, even if only for 90 seconds, nap time won’t happen.  She will wake up the second we park the car in the driveway.  If I carry her up to bed, she will be downstairs at my side before I can put away the groceries.  Even Swiper is useless in this situation.  For whatever reason, Swiper works better at bedtime versus naptime.

Yesterday afternoon she fell asleep in the car.  I did everything to wake her up.  I called her name loudly.  I opened the windows.  I turned up the music.  Nothing.  She was out cold.  I brought her home – took her upstairs – she came downstairs – I took her back upstairs.  We repeated this for 40 minutes.  Then I gave up.  (Hoping the lack of nap would result in an earlier bedtime … 🙁 it didn’t.

At 4:30 p.m. I took her down the street to get her haircut.  After weeks of screams and tears each morning when I tried to brush the knots and food out of her hair I needed an emergency cut.  The pictures show you the result.  She fell asleep.  I guess naps are okay, as long as you aren’t at home.  I had to hold her head up while the hairdresser finished the cut.  For all the hair stylists out there – I think this is an untapped niche market.  You can cater to children needing naps.  And, an extra bonus, you won’t have to try to get them to stay still.

This is taking too long. I'm just going to close my eyes.

My head is getting heavy. Could you just hold it up for me.

Just another minutes. A girl needs her beauty sleep you know.
